What is the “millage rate”?
The millage rate is the amount per $1,000 used to calculate taxes on a property. Millage rates are most often found in personal property taxes, where the expressed millage rate is multiplied by the total taxable value of the property to arrive at the property taxes due. Millage rates are also used by school boards to calculate local school taxes to be collected based on a derivation of the total property value within school district boundaries.
Example of a township property tax bill calculation:
Assessed property value of $45,000
Millage rate of .015450
Face amount of tax bill (45,000 x .015450) = $695.25
Example of a county property tax bill calculation:
Assessed property value of $45,000
Millage rate of .02545
Face amount of tax bill (45,000 x .02545) = $1,145.25
Example of a school property tax bill calculation:
Assessed property value of $45,000
Millage rate of .13832
Face amount of tax bill (45,000 x .13136) = $6,224.40
